On Wednesday, I noticed that everyone in Cartagena from the sidewalk vendors to the grocery store clerks to old men chilling out in plazas were wearing identical hats like the oversized one on the top of this ceviche stand. I asked my Spanish teacher about it, and he said it’s called un sombrero vueltiao, a characteristic hat of cartageneros. I figured there must have been some kind of festival going on that day so that everyone knew to wear the hat, but he said no…sometimes randomly everyone just does it. Curious. He did tell me that the most high-end sombrero vueltiao is called a Clinton—that’s right, after our ex-presidente Bill. Turns out Clinton donned the hat when he visited town during his presidency and got a hero’s welcome. — Rachel
